In a dominant display at the Women’s Asia Cup 2024, Shafali Verma's career-best innings of 81 runs powered the Indian women’s cricket team to a comprehensive 82-run victory over Nepal, securing their spot in the semi-finals. The match, held on July 23 at the Dambulla International Stadium, saw India maintain their unbeaten streak, finishing at the top of Group A with three wins out of three.
India’s Powerful Batting Performance
Opting to bat first, the Indian team, led by Smriti Mandhana in the absence of regular captain Harmanpreet Kaur, posted an impressive total of 178 for 3. The decision to rest key players like Harmanpreet and all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar allowed India to test their bench strength, bringing in S Sajana and Arundhati Reddy for valuable game time.
The opening pair of Shafali Verma and D Hemalatha laid a strong foundation with a partnership of 122 runs. Shafali was in sublime form, capitalizing on Nepal's bowling errors to reach her tenth T20I fifty in just 26 balls. Her aggressive innings included 12 fours and a six, showcasing her ability to dominate the opposition with both power and finesse.
In contrast, Hemalatha had a more restrained innings, scoring 47 runs off 42 balls. Despite some struggle with timing, she managed to anchor the innings, allowing Shafali to play her natural game. Hemalatha's performance highlighted her potential to contribute significantly at the top order, although she will be looking to improve her strike rate in future matches.
Nepal's Struggle with the Bat
Chasing a daunting target of 179, Nepal found themselves in trouble early against India’s disciplined bowling attack. The Nepalese batters struggled to cope with the pressure of chasing under the lights and were restricted to 96 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Arundhati Reddy was instrumental in dismantling the Nepal batting lineup, grabbing 2 wickets for 28 runs. Her ability to swing the ball and deliver key breakthroughs proved crucial. Deepti Sharma also played a pivotal role, taking 3 wickets for just 13 runs with her crafty off-spin, while Radha Yadav chipped in with 2 for 12.
Nepal's most experienced bowler, Sita Rana Magar, briefly slowed India's scoring with her left-arm spin, dismissing both Shafali and Hemalatha. However, the lack of support from other bowlers made it challenging for Nepal to contain the aggressive Indian batters.
Jemimah Rodrigues' Late Surge
After the dismissals of the openers, India experienced a slight dip in their scoring rate. However, Jemimah Rodrigues provided the necessary impetus towards the end of the innings. Her quickfire 28* off just 15 balls, which included five boundaries, helped India push towards the 180-run mark, ensuring a challenging total for Nepal to chase.
Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals
With the victory, India advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face the second-placed team from Group B on Friday, July 26, in Dambulla. As the group stage progresses, Bangladesh is the likely contender to face India, setting the stage for an exciting clash between the two teams with a history of competitive encounters.
India's performance in the tournament so far highlights their depth and versatility, with players stepping up at crucial moments. As the semi-final approaches, India will aim to continue their winning momentum and secure a spot in the final of the Women's Asia Cup 2024.
