From A Delivery Boy To A Multi-Millionaire! - Ambur Climbed The Stairs Of Success

Ambur Iyyapa, an ordinary man from Vellore, Tamil Nadu who started earning with four-figure salary and is now one of the most prized employees of Flipkart. His story is an example of the wonders ones dedication and hardwork can do.

After completing his school, he went to Hosur which was 125 km from his hometown, to do a diploma course and then he worked for a year at Ashok Leyland. After this he moved to Bengaluru and did the job of a delivery boy with First Flight Couriers. From here he learned a lot of knowledge in logistics.

After that just within a span of four years, he with his hardwork and decication became the manager of the logistics for all incoming mails for south Bengaluru.

Ambur now wanted to do something more and decided to upgrade his knowledge and skills. Soon then he decided to do a three-month course.  So, he took a leave and completed the course. However, he too had struggles to face, as success has never been easy. Once he came back he got to know that His position was no longer available with the company and he didn’t have any other way out! Luckily that time he heard from a delivery boy that Flipkart was looking for an in-house logistic person.

That time Flipkart not that popular. It was just an online book seller that also not known to many!

He then approached Flipkart and met Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal who were majorly concerned about problems in delivery system. He assured that he could help them in this scenario.  Ambur became the first employee for a salary of Rs 8,000. In an interview Sachin said once at that time they were not looking for much, they just wanted a person who could speak little English and use a computer.

Till today’s date Ambur remembers that he did not even get his joining letter for one whole year because there was no HR. When he started to work there he was very confused as for him it was a big move he had never managed 10-12 big publishers and conducted around 100 deliveries a day.

Ambur’s style of working changed the business! He devised unique ways of coordinating with the delivery boys to ensure that customers were happy. If in case the delivery boy reported that one vendor did not stock a book that a customer wanted, Ambur will not even waste a second and call up another vendor who had the book in stock. He will then arrange the book and promptly call another delivery boy who was on that route and ask him to collect and deliver the book within the mentioned timeline.

He was so familiar with his work that whatever a customer wanted to know he gave all the information without even looking at the computer. He had become so vital for the organization that his number was listed as Flipkart’s customer care number! Soon he started taking ownership and made necessary operational changes. The Bansals were proud to have him and offered him shares in their growing organization. In one year his salary had grown by 10 times.



“In the history of Flipkart, at various points of time, people have joined because of whom Flipkart’s trajectory has changed in a material way,” observes Binny. “Iyyappa was the first of them.”
