Zoom Agrees To Pay Users $ 85 Million To Provide Misleading Security Information

The Zoom video conference application will pay its users $ 85 million in a class-action lawsuit. The video conferencing platform has been accused of providing misleading information about the forum and its end-to-end encryption on white security paper. In addition, he was accused of providing user data to Facebook and Google without permission without their consent.

Besides lacking E2E encryption, Zoom has also been accused of not being able to stop zoom bombing. Incidents of strangers hijacking and disrupting Zoom meetings have increased on several occasions over the past year as the pandemic has led to an increase in remote working. As pointed out in an ArsTechnica report, the lawsuit accused the company of failing to act against it through simple technological solutions that could have been used.

Zoom has also been accused of sharing user data with other tech majors like Facebook and Google, despite promises not to sell user data to third parties. The lawsuit pointed out that Zoom was using the Facebook SDK and similar third-party software development kits that enabled the data transfer.

According to a report by ArsTechnica, a lawsuit was filed at the District Court for the Northern District of California and the video conferencing platform agreed to pay $ 85 million to resolve the complaints.

All Zoom users are eligible to receive worldwide settlement amounts, including two free and paid ones, if they were Zoom account holders between March 30, 2016, and July 30, 2021. If the court approved this settlement amount, Zoom Paying users will receive 15% of what they paid for Zoom's core meeting features, or $25, whichever is higher.

In addition to the billing amount, Zoom has also agreed to work on improving the security and privacy of the platform, including protecting consumer data, strengthening privacy disclosure, and protecting meetings.
