Mahendra Singh Dhoni, fondly known as Captain Cool, has been a legendary figure in the world of cricket. His decision to put his retirement plans on hold after receiving an overwhelming amount of love from his fans has left cricket enthusiasts eagerly anticipating his next move. Dhoni's journey from a humble background in Ranchi to becoming one of India's most iconic cricketers is an inspiring tale of determination and success. With numerous accolades and victories under his belt, including leading the Indian cricket team to triumph in major ICC events, Dhoni has left an indelible mark on the sport. When asked by Harsha Bhogle during the post-match interview about his thoughts on leaving behind his legacy, the cricketer replied, “Looking for an answer? Circumstantially if you see this is the best time for me to announce retirement. But the amount of love and affection that I have been shown, wherever I have been this year…. I think the easy thing for me to say would be to say ‘Thank you very much’, but the tough thing for me would be to work hard for nine months and come back and play at least one more season of IPL. But a lot depends on the body. It would take 6-7 months to decide. It will be more like a gift from my side. It’s not easy for me too but the way they have shown their love and affection, that’s something that I need to do”. Delighting the fans all over the globe.

 

Dhoni, from Ranchi, was raised by a strict father, loving mother, and supportive sister in a modest family. From the Interschool team to global acclaim cricketer, he came a long way. He worked as a TC at Kharagpur Station in the 2000s before pursuing cricket full-time in 2003. In 2004, he debuted in ODI and Test matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. A year later, he debuted in T20I against South Africa. He became India’s ODI captain after Rahul Dravid and was chosen as India’s T20I captain in 2007. Since then he never looked back.

 

India won three major ICC events(ICC World Twenty20 2007, Cricket World Cup 2011, and ICC Champions Trophy 2013) and two Aisa Cup tournaments under his leadership, a unique feat for any cricket captain. India succeeded in Test cricket under his leadership, winning the ICC Test Mace in 2010 and 2011 and the ICC Test Championship in 2013. He also led Chennai Super Kings to the IPL finals in 2008, he led CSK to victory in 2010,2011,2018,2021, and 2023. He received Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratan Award in 2008, Padma Shree in 2009, and Padma Bhushan in 2018, which are Among India’s highest honours. He was awarded the title of Lieutenant Colonel of the Parachute Regiment in the Indian Territorial Army for his contributions to cricket by the Indian Army in 2011. He announced his retirement from Test matches in 2014 and stepped down as captain of T20Is and ODIs in 2017. In 2020, he announced his retirement from all International formats of the sport and continues his journey as a cricketer in IPL, but when it was believed that he would retire from this format also, fans were disheartened, later he said that he had decided to put that on halt depending on his physical condition, seeing the love and affection of fans he received during this session of IPL.

 



Let’s just now hope to see Our Captian Cool on the field for one more session next year and if decides to retire then bid farewell to him with all our hearts.
